What Is Hololoot? Our Project Explained for your Grandparents

A few weeks ago we published a simplified guide to AR and NFTs — a follow-up from our article explaining the metaverse in simple terms. Today, we’re back for the big one:

“What is Hololoot?”

We understand that for mainstream adoption to happen everyone needs to understand our app and the technology behind it. In this article, we attempt to bring this milestone even closer by equipping you with the tools you need to explain Hololoot to anyone, even if they have a limited understanding of technology.

If you haven’t already, make sure you check out our article on AR and NFTs — it’s mandatory pre-reading for this course

What is Hololoot?

In the ‘About’ section of our website, we introduce Hololoot as :

“…the world’s first AR NFT generator, marketplace and metaverse designed for widespread adoption. Built by AR industry veterans, it combines the latest developments in automated 3D modeling with the unique properties of NFTs to produce an app that is simultaneously powerful and easy to use.”

Let’s break this down.

If you’re a user, you’ll probably experience Hololoot through our mobile app, which can be downloaded just like any other app on your phone.

As we know, AR gives you a digital overlay on the real world. In our app, this is achieved through the phone’s camera. When you open Hololoot and navigate to our metaverse viewer, your phone’s camera will turn on and you’ll be able to see on the screen what your camera sees.

To augment the digital layer Hololoot uses NFTs linked to 3D models. When you purchase a Hololoot NFT, you’re able to open it in the metaverse viewer. For example, if I own a Hololoot NFT — like Holly our mascot — that means I can view that 3D model in AR. I can open Holly in the viewer, place her and resize her, depending on what I want to do.

When I look at my phone screen, I’ll see Holly in the world around me. Of course, when I look up from my phone, Holly won’t be there in real life. Hololoot allows us to experience the world around us with this digital augmentation, mediated through our phone screens.

Hololoot also allows you to create your own AR creations. This is what we mean by ‘generator’. If you know how to create 3D models on your computer, you can upload them to Hololoot and have them converted to something you can use in our metaverse viewer.

Our marketplace is where all of the 3D models come together. You can purchase models there and very soon sell them as well. You can also participate in exciting launch events we work on with our partners.

Hololoot lets you bring the world to life through AR — and we’ve created a suite of products that make creating your own AR models as simple as possible. Our marketplace also brings different creators and collections together to make the experience as streamlined as possible.

Where do NFTs enter into this?

Every AR model in Hololoot is tied to an NFT. This means you can only open the model in the metaverse viewer if you own the NFT.

Our mascot Holly, for example, was given to some of our community members as a gift. She’s an NFT, which means that we can verify who owns a copy of Holly. If someone tries to create a fake Holly NFT, it’s pretty easy to verify that it isn’t legitimate.

When you open Hololoot, you’ll be prompted to connect your blockchain wallet that contains your NFTs. Once connected, you can view all of the AR NFTs that you own and load them into the metaverse viewer.

Why does Hololoot need NFTs?

There are plenty of AR apps that don’t use NFTs. In fact, most of them don’t — we’re one of the pioneering projects in this emerging space. But NFTs will play a big role in the future of AR, just as NFTs will play a big role in the future of most digital things.

NFTs allow us to create digital scarcity with our models. Imagine going to a gallery to purchase a sculpture and being given a choice between two different objects. One of them was created from a cast that was destroyed after 10 copies of the sculpture were made. The other is from an unlimited set, and the artist has already produced thousands.

Putting aesthetics aside, which would be more valuable?

NFTs allow us to create scarcity for digital items and protect the work of digital artists. As more of our lives move online, this is incredibly important for the skilled creatives behind this work.

NFTs also allow us to make our assets do more. With a traditional AR viewer, the AR model can be viewed in 3D — and that’s pretty much it. With Hololoot, holding an AR NFT will most often get you access to a range of other benefits. These could be extra items in a game or access to a service. It might even be redeemable for some real-world merchandise. The possibilities are endless.

With the world heading toward a future secured by NFTs, and with AR becoming an increasingly important part of the tech of tomorrow, the intersection of these two trends is an inevitability. With Hololoot, we’re working to ensure that this merge happens in a way that empowers users.

So, what can I do with Hololoot?

Hololoot is currently in development, so the features available through our app are only a small part of what we’re aiming to offer. Still, you can find some exciting features there already.

  • Buy and sell AR NFTs and profit from the trades
  • Unlock extra benefits through our partners by purchasing our collaborative AR NFTs
  • View your AR NFTs in the metaverse viewer and bring them to life wherever you want

In the future, you’ll be able to do a whole lot more.

  • Create your own AR NFTs from nearly any 3D model
  • Participate in a P2P marketplace for AR NFTs right from the app
  • Earn tokens by playing Play-to-Earn games based on our AR NFTs
  • Interact with others through AR in our metaverse
